WebA bone scan is a nuclear medicine procedure that creates a picture of the metabolism of the bones. Nuclear medicine uses small amounts of radioactive materials called tracers (radionuclides). These tracers collect in some organs and tissues, including bones. WebThis tomographic procedure allows one to examine with greater contrast and anatomic clarity such structures as the spine, hips, knees, and temporomandibular joints (TMJ). Abnormalities also seen on planar bone scintigrams often are more convincingly identified and better localized by SPECT.
