WebPeter Carey (1943-) Carey worked as an advertising copywriter and at various other odd jobs in Australia and England until 1988, when he became a full-time writer. His collections of short stories, The Fat Man in History (1974; U.K. title, Exotic Pleasures) and War Crimes (1979), exhibited many grotesque and macabre elements. It was during this time that he produced most of the stories collected in War Crimes (1979), as well as Bliss (1981), his first published novel. Carey started his own advertising agency in 1980, the Sydney-based McSpedden Carey Advertising Consultants, in partnership with Bani McSpedden.
